Standards-Based Grading (SBG) can feel overwhelming to implement, especially in the arts where students are often assessed in large groups. This workshop will walk you through what SBG looks like in practice for the ARTS. We’ll explore how to design assignments around clear learning targets and assess student progress in ways that are both meaningful and manageable. You’ll see real examples of how assignments and assessments can be entered into Aeries—our district’s grading system—so grades reflect mastery of standards rather than just completion. Interpersonal speaking is such a key component of the world language classroom, and it can also be the most challenging, especially as a new teacher and in lower levels. This session will be all about how to structure and encourage frequent and consistent interpersonal speaking between students as well as between students and teachers in a world language classroom. This includes chat maps, scaffolding with sentence frames/starters, how to build towards proficiency throughout the unit, how to grade on the rubrics, and how to promote equity of participation.
